Information About Vertigo Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

What Are the Symptoms of Vertigo?

While there are many symptoms of vertigo, the main symptom is a feeling of false movement. You may feel like you are falling when you are not (vertigo can also impact your balance cause you to fall but that’s different). You may feel like the room is spinning or tilting. You may lose your sense of balance and not be able to stand or walk. You may feel extremely dizzy, to the point of nausea or vomiting.

These symptoms fall into the broad category of motion sensitivity. Motion sensitivity is what many people experience as motion sickness, for example, getting sick riding in a car or plane. Motion sensitivity can also include getting a queasy stomach watching a movie (particularly on multidimensional screen such as an IMAX movie) that involves large movements like turning and flipping.

Beyond motion sensitivity, other symptoms can include lightheadedness, blurred vision, difficulty focusing, headache and muscle stiffness. (Lightheadedness is diferent from dizziness in that it does not typically involve any kind of motion.) In addtion to physical symptoms, vertigo may also include emotional symptoms such as worry and anxiety. People who suffer recurring episodes of vertigo sometime experience a panic attack as a result of the onset of the vertigo.

While the “hallmark” symptom of vertigo is the sensation of dizziness or moving when you aren’t, there are many varied symptoms that are possible as well. Likewise, the symptoms of vertigo are not always unique to just vertigo. For example, vertigo almost always involves dizziness, but dizziness is not always vertigo. For this reason, it is important that anyone suffering vertigo consult with a knowledgeable health care practitioner before attempting any diagnosis or treatment on their own.
